Internship compensation

Nov 11, 2011

If you are doing an internship in Mexico, it is not always possible to receive a placement fee. As a foreign intern you cannot receive a compensation that is more than transport costs and meals.

To be able to do an internship in Mexico you will need the FM3 visa. On the website of the Mexican Embassy in The Netherlands you can find more information about the procedure to obtain this visa. In case you will receive a compensation from the Mexican organisation where you will be doing your internship, the organisation should apply for your FM3 with the Instituto Nacional de Migración in Mexico.

Tax agreement

The Netherlands and Mexico have an agreement to assure you will not have to pay income taxes in both countries. Take into account that the income you receive in another country is always part of your fiscal income in the Netherlands.

For more information about taxes in other countries you can check the webpage of the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (IBFD) or call the Dutch "BelastingTelefoon Buitenland" at (055) 538 53 85.
