Companies are looking for graduates in exact sciences

Engineers are hired first and graduates from exact sciences programmes receive better wages.

Human resource employers and companies are signaling that engineers have a better chance of finding a highly paid job than liberal arts and administrative graduates.

“There is a high demand for them in the market, besides they (engineers) receive better salaries”, comments Alberto del Castillo, director of selection and consulting at Adecco, a company specialized in human resources.

“This is because of the technological advances, in which engineers are key pieces. This applies for graduates in information technologies as well as those in industrial mining, which is undergoing a strong boom”, mentions Del Castillo.

For those executives that studied areas related to social sciences and liberal arts, it takes more time to find a job in the labour market.

“Their main work field, in my point of view, is the public sector, which we know is undergoing an optimization of resources and budget cuts”.

Alberto del Castillo emphasized that nowadays the most booming areas in Mexico are: environmental engineering, nuclear physics, biotechnology, mechatronics, robotics, ”green“ architecture, electronic commerce and alternative medicine. 

Change of course 

Alina Landa, key account manager at Manpower, comments that because of regulations concerning ”the environment“, companies had to change their activities and therefore started hiring engineers.

“The industries have been evolving. In the past the concept of ”social responsibility” did not exist, now it is very common to work ecologically”, she comments.

It is remarkable that for business students it costs effort to find their place in the labour market, in particular for the jobs in accounting, financing and management. This is paradoxal, since there has always been demand for contracts of this sort.

“The problems which the companies or candidates face, is that not only that they lack working experience, but also that they do not have the required competencies”, she explained.
