New Minister of Education

On 6 April 2009, Mexican President Felipe Calderón named Alonso Lujambio as new Head of the Ministry of Education at a ceremony that took place at Los Pinos, the official presidential residence.

Mr Lujambio is replacing former minister Josefina Vazquez Mota, who resigned in order to stand as a candidate for a legislative seat in the July elections.

Before his new position, Mr Lujambio was the commissioner of the Instituto Federal de Acceso a la Información, and for the last 25 years has been a scholar of the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and Universidad Iberoamericana, as well as former counsellor of the Instituto Federal Electoral.

Alonso Lujambio has a degree in social sciences from the ITAM, and a Master’s degree and a PhD in political science from Yale University, United States.

In his first speech as Minister of Education, Mr Lujambio promised to promote a transparent policy and to focus on the improvement of the Mexican education system.
