Although El Universal invited all universities in several states to participate in the ranking, there are some important institutions that decided not to participate. Some important absentees are Tec de Monterrey (ITESM), Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA), Universidad La Salle (ULSA) and Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City, the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, and the Universidad Regiomontana in Monterrey. This is reflected in the rankings where some institutions may be a few positions higher because of the absence of these institutions.
